12 Days of Giftmas: Day 4 Pup Treats

Ever since watching Lady and the Tramp, I’ve kind of associated dogs with Christmas. The gift of a dog seemed like such a romantic notion, but as we all know, a dog is for life, not just for Christmas.

I like to make treats for the pup as I then know they are filled with goodness and no chemicals. I can also taylor them to the pups needs (yay for peppermint and parsley to counter dog breath!).

As it’s Christmas, I wanted to make something a little different for the pup, with a slightly Christmas feel so thought a spiced apple treat would be perfect.

My dog treats tend to follow a similar recipe with oats forming the base, then assorted other ingredients added for flavour. Oats are generally low in GI, good for dogs who have wheat allergies and high in fibre so a good source of food for your pup (as always all treats should be given in moderation and any concerns talk to your vet). As long as you peel and deseed apples, they’re also a great source of fibre and vitamins for your furry friends. I checked assorted sources as to the safety of cinnamon for dogs. PetMD said it’s safe for dogs in moderation. However, I didn’t know how the pup would react to cinnamon so I only added a pinch but you can omit it if you’re worried, or talk to your vet.

Ingredients (makes 15 using a small cupcake tin):

  • 1 1/2 cups of organic porridge oats
  • 1/3 cup of stewed apples (either from a tin or stew your own, leaving out the sugar)
  • 1 egg
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Silicone cupcake holder

Method:

Blitz the porridge oats until powdery.

Sprinkle the cinnamon over the top.

Mix in the stewed apples and add the egg.

Press into you small cupcake tin

Bake in the oven at 180degrees/gas mark 4/350degrees F for about 15 minutes.

Allow to cool and then let the pup dig in!

I think she approves!
