It’s day nine of our 12 Days of Craftmas!
So far we’ve written our letters to Santa, made our pom pom garland, decorated our Christmas cards, cut and stuck our paper chains, made sure Rudolph could be heard by adding his Christmas bell and made a tassel for our Christmas star, coloured in our baubles and decorated our mini Christmas trees!
Christmas stockings are such an important part of Christmas, aren’t they? We’ve created our personalised stockings so that you can either sew or glue them together, then make sure they’re hung up on Christmas Eve, ready for Father Christmas to fill (or are you getting a lump of coal?)
In your kits, you’ll find two sides of your red stocking and two white pieces for the top.
For today’s craft you’ll need glue or needle and thread. You can also add buttons or decorations to your stocking. Check out my video on Instagram for a video guide. If you can’t access the video, check out the instructions below. I’ll detail how to do a ‘running’ stitch but here’s a link to doing blanket stitch if you’d like to learn a new skill.
Instructions (if sewing using running stitch)
- Sort out your stocking pieces so you have the two red pieces, with the piece with the initial facing up. Lay the piece with the initial on the top and line them up.
- Take your needle and thread it with a long piece of cotton. Tie a knot in the end.
- Put our needle between the pieces of stocking and push it up. Pull through the cotton so the knot sits between the pieces.
- Push the needle back down, through both pieces of stocking and out of the back. You’ve done your first stitch!
- Leave a small space (I aim for about 2 or 3millimetres) then push the needle back up through both pieces of stocking. Again leaving the small space, push it back down through them again. You’ll see the stitches starting to form. Make sure you pull the cotton through all the way at the end of each stitch.
- Continue your running stitch around your stocking.
- Congratulations, you’ve sewn your stocking!
- Fold over your white ribbon and hold it at the back of the stocking, then place the white piece on top. When you sew the white piece of stocking into place, make sure you sew through the ribbon so you can hang your stocking.
- To add the white top, follow the same principle with the running stitch but along the top end, go through one layer of red stocking only.
- Decorate your stocking as you would like. They look great with buttons, ribbons or your gems added.
- When you’re finished, you can hang your stockings by the chimney or under the Christmas tree.
- Take a photo and make sure you use the hashtag #12daysofcraftmas so I can see your makes!
Instructions (if gluing)
- Sort out your stocking pieces so you have the two red pieces, with the piece with the initial facing up.
- Gently pour some runny glue to the top of the stockings and press the white pieces into place. Set aside to dry.
- Very gently apply runny glue along the edge of your stocking. When you have it around the edge, carefully line up your stocking pieces and press them together, ensuring the initial is facing out. Make sure you insert your ribbon on one side so you can hang your stocking up.
- Set aside to dry. I dint it helps to leave something heavy such as a book on top of the stocking to press the edges together.
